For more than two decades, The Underground Railroad Conductor has been committed to producing superior-quality publications on the legendary Underground Railroad network, and we continue to work toward this goal.
- What is the Underground Railroad?
The term “Underground Railroad” refers to enslaved African Americans’ attempts to break out of slavery. There were attempts to escape slavery everywhere, initially to maroon settlements in rugged or remote terrain on the exterior of populated areas. Every decade that slavery was legal in the United States saw an increase in active efforts to help people escape, even though the majority of freedom seekers started their journeys on their own and many succeeded in self-emancipation without assistance.
In most cases, the choice to help a person seeking freedom may have been made on that moment as the chance presented itself. However, the Underground Railroad was planned and organized in some regions, especially after the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Operatives worked through networks based on family or religion.
